feng37: “..nobody there spoke English, and the ones who weren’t completely confused were evasive and secretive about the whole thing.”
37friend: “Well, you were in the Birth Planning Office. The PSB probably told them to open a Foreigner Management Office and they just didn’t want to, simple as that. Anyway, wrong tree. What you’re talking about could only be done properly if you were to set up a company specifically to help helpless and hapless foreigners out. Anyone who can speak English is not going to have too much of a problem, and you’re not in a position to help any non-English speaking foreigners out. If it’s visa problems they have, there’s not really anything anyone least of all you can do about it. Besides, even if you did go ahead with this and saw any sort of success, the government would either shut you down or co-opt you. Speaking of which, how’s that ‘racial discrimination’ suit of yours going?”
feng37: “Guess I scared them off, last I heard they were trying to usher in a swipe-card system like Country Garden has, but none of the property owners were casting votes either way. The seniors keep protesting every Sunday morning down on the corner. They’ve got their hands full spying on all the underground illegal Christmas-goers that have infiltrated the Riverside as it is. Hey did I tell you my blog got blocked?”
37friend: “Congratulations.”

Why do 43% of the people in Japan feel negative about the government?
Is that something which happens in the course of a week, a month, a year or more..
..that slips past unnoticed, the way so many things do these media-overloaded days?
The way a report proposing full-on regulation of online content that nobody talks about becomes a bill, passed and law?
And what kind of country regulates blogs, anyway?
From EastSouthWestNorth:
| Feel positive towards government |
Feel negative towards government |
Feel positive towards people |

| Japan | 17% | 43% | 46% | 12% |

The title of this post derives itself from a line in recording artist Jay-Z’s song 99 problems, which talks of the daily struggles a young black North American man faces and how life goes in it. The censored Black Entertainment Television version can be heard and watched here—embedding has been disabled by request—and the lyrics have been attached at the bottom of this post. Today being Dec. 10, I wish you a problem-free International Human Rights Day.
A few days ago, the anti-conventional website I currently work for as editor—unconventional in the bottom-up and possibly paper-free media of the future it seeks to be manifest in—received an invitation extended to six of its participants to take part in a Q&A session with Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson, and Graça Machel, three members of The Elders, a new initiative in globaluniversal human rights awareness work which brings legendary figures from within the field of human rights work to the same table—recently retired Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing, who though different diplomatic missions has lived for nearly a decade in Africa, is one of them—and seeks, as a first step framed within this next year leading up to the 60th anniversary of the international declaration of human rights, to get a billion signatures of pledged support for the group’s online petition.

One last post on the Yilishen meltdown Shenyang lockdown for now, as I find myself having to file away the reasons I’d assumed this story, which itself I still think falls under “Olympics,” would have gotten a lot of coverage.
Those reasons aside, I was doubly disappointed and some this afternoon when I received an e-mail from a Chinese journalist working for an unnamed foreign media. Here’s what I got:

Four thoughts on Yilishen: (update below)
Now a week after the fact, very few English-language media have reported on this massive incident;
A man was executed earlier this year for doing roughly the very same thing only on a much smaller scale;
Having had a GVO post be singled out and blocked at the url level for the first time because of this puts things in a new perspective;
The below—sent unsolicited to me just now by the single most comprehensive source thus far on what is happening in Shenyang right now—suggests that this could go so far up as to involve big-time badasses like Bo Xilai and Li Changchun.

The landlady finally paid this year’s management fees and cosmic balance has returned to my apartment, but apparently there’s still the question of ‘rent-out tax’…one of the last visits had the security guards affix a large pink notice to my door to that effect, with instructions to pass it onto the 中介.
The doorknob is still hooped, but I’m going to leave it as is, I only use the deadbolt as it is. I actually paid for the current doorknob, when I locked myself out just days after I moved in and the locksmith went all jaws of life on the old one. Besides, if the guards do eventually rip it off I can use the hole to speak to anyone who comes knocking, and people can use it to poke notices in, etc. Regardless, that whole drama seems over for the moment.

Nov. 26 update: don’t know how I missed this, but someone at Black and White Cat left a comment on the 23rd which claims that ‘people seen taking pictures or holding recording equipment are being arrested.’ And here I thought I wasn’t making the rounds of Chinese video sharing websites frequently enough. Let’s hope Beijing learns from this one that half the reason this got as much play as it did was because they stepped on our turf. Hey Beijing! There’s too many of us bloggers, you’ll never pwn!

It was able to remain peaceful, nobody shot so far from what I’ve heard
Mostly dispersed now, I guess they’ll just be one of the groups who show up in Beijing for The Game
Although discussions have been mostly moved into QQ groups and keep moving
Another protest is scheduled for tomorrow morning
Reuters has given GVO all that money over the last two years
And still not bothered to profit from it
